THE NEED FOR LOCUMS
Australian regulations stipulate that a pharmacy cannot open its doors to the public if a pharmacist is not present on site. As such there is immense pressure on pharmacy-owners to ensure that pharmacists are always available and able to work during open hours. This in turn puts pressure on pharmacists to always be fit, healthy and have stability away from work to enure that they can turn up to work everyday.
From time to time, whether due to illness, or external factors beyond our control, turing up to a rostered shift is simply not possible. This leaves the owner of the pharmacy with two options:
- Frantically search through the contact list trying to find a locum pharmacist that can work
- Close the shop until such a time that a locum can be found
The revenue lost in an unscheduled closed day is hard to make up. The goodwill and trust lost from consumers is near impossible to recuperate.

Flat Rate Pharmacy Locums was an idea that was born when our director (a pharmacist himself) fell ill and was forced to search for a reasonably priced and well qualified locum. After contacting other agencies he was shocked at the prices being charged and the difficulty in getting definite answers. As a result, he was forced to work the next day, with a fever and fishing for sympathy from anyone that would listen. From that day, he decided to begin making a company that would fill the void, and not take advantage of desperate pharmacies.
With years of experience in the pharmacy industry ranging from Sydney to rural NSW, we understand the stresses involved in finding a locum. The damage done to the reputation of the pharmacy, and the complaints that sometimes follow, can in some cases, force pharmacists to work while sick, or while going through emotional stress.
