THE NEED FOR LOCUMS

Australian regulations stipulate that a pharmacy cannot open its doors to the public if a pharmacist is not present on site. As such there is immense pressure on pharmacy-owners to ensure that pharmacists are always available and able to work during open hours. This in turn puts pressure on pharmacists to always be fit, healthy and have stability away from work to enure that they can turn up to work everyday.

From time to time, whether due to illness, or external factors beyond our control, turing up to a rostered shift is simply not possible. This leaves the owner of the pharmacy with two options:

• Frantically search through the contact list trying to find a locum pharmacist that can work
• Close the shop until such a time that a locum can be found

The revenue lost in an unscheduled closed day is hard to make up. The goodwill and trust lost from consumers is near impossible to recuperate.
